School Resource Unit
2024 School Resource Deputies
In 2023, the Chesapeake Sheriff’s Office signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Chesapeake Public Schools to provide School Resource Deputies to all Chesapeake elementary schools.
The goal of the program is to protect our students and staff while ensuring children's first interactions with law enforcement are positive and reassuring. The SRDs also help with delinquency prevention, and explaining the role and duties of law enforcement officers in society.
There are 14 SRDs. Each SRD is assigned to two schools. The schools are divided into two boroughs (east and west). Each borough is assigned a sergeant to supervise and help where needed.
Each SRD is dual-certified as a Deputy Sheriff and Police Officer. They also completed specialized School Resource Officer training.
The SRDs range in experience from 7 years to 25 years.
