WVEC: CSO creates a support group to help family members of homicide victims

CHESAPEAKE, Va. — The Chesapeake Sheriff’s Office announced Monday that it would be starting a new group in April that will help family members and friends of homicide victims.

The Virginia Victim Assistance Network, who is partnering with the sheriff’s office on this project, already supports a similar group in Newport News.

Hampton Roads family members and close friends of homicide victims, ages 18 and over, are invited to come to the weekly meetings, which the sheriff’s office said will be facilitated by licensed mental health providers.

Chesapeake Sheriff Jim O’Sullivan said the partnership would help expand the care they offer to homicide survivors.

“It will make it possible for us to help them in a deeper and more meaningful way,” O’Sullivan said.

The weekly meetings are scheduled to start April 1 and run until June. They will be held at the Indian River Library from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. The meetings are free and transportation assistance is available.
