The Chesapeake Sheriff’s Office has received a report of scammers impersonating a Chesapeake Sheriff’s Office lieutenant and demanding money from residents over the phone. We’re told a “Lieutenant Johnson” claims there is a warrant out for the resident’s arrest because they failed to report for a DNA test. The scammer tells the resident that they can receive a PR (personal recognizance) bond if they make a payment right then on the phone. Sheriff Jim O’Sullivan wants to warn residents that this is a SCAM. No one named Lieutenant Johnson works for the Chesapeake Sheriff’s Office and the phone number is NOT assigned to our agency. Furthermore, we will never ask for payment over the phone, nor offer to negotiate a payment in lieu of arrest. Anyone with questions about a warrant may contact the Chesapeake Sheriff’s Office at (757) 382-6159.
