Week 4 of the 21st Session Academy has come to a close. This week, otherwise known as “Law Week,” is one of the most academically challenging weeks in the academy.
Before diving headfirst into “Law Week”, the trainees were fitted for their body armor first thing Monday morning. After graduation, the newly sworn-in deputies will be issued a bulletproof vest as part of their uniforms. Each vest is custom-fit to ensure proper protection and disbursement of impact.
With that done, they buckled down for five straight days of education on the criminal justice system. They learned about constitutional law, the Code of Virginia, and both civil and criminal liability.
“This is one of the most important classes our trainees will go through,” said Academy Instructor Master Deputy Janet Sims. “In law enforcement, we take an oath to defend and uphold the Constitution.”
Over the weekend, the trainees will need to study all of the material they learned this week to pass a 100+ question test on Monday.
On Thursday, the trainees participated in the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Virginia . This four-mile run started at Chesapeake City Park and ended at Chesapeake City Hall. They weren’t alone on this trek, around 80 members of the CSO also participated.
“This is the furthest we have run so far,” said one trainee. “Surprisingly I had a really good time. This is such a great cause.”
The sheriff’s office broke the state record by raising over $15,000 for Special Olympics Virginia.
Next week our trainees will be learning about record-keeping, how to process inmates, radio communication, and uniform appearance. They will also get a first-hand look at what it’s like working as a deputy in our courthouses.
Only 14 weeks to go, 21st Session!
