Week 5
June 16, 2023Week 7
June 30, 20232Week 6 of the 21st Session Academy is a wrap! The trainee’s teamwork was put to the test this week when their class grew by two… two logs. The logs weigh 350 and 500 pounds, respectively. Just like they would pick up and carry a classmate struggling to finish a run, the 21st Session had to carry these logs everywhere they went as a group.
This week, the trainees continued to familiarize themselves with various job assignments throughout the sheriff’s office. They started with Work Force, a program that gives inmates the opportunity to pay off their court fees and fines by completing community service projects (like dredging stormwater ditches, cutting grass, and landscaping projects in historic South Norfolk). They also learned the correct procedure for transferring and releasing inmates. As part of the lesson, trainees participated in scenarios that focused on the proper use of restraints including waist chains and leg irons.
On Thursday, the lesson took a more somber tone as the academy focused on suicide prevention, including some of the risk factors and warning signs. The 21st Session learned how they help prevent a suicide attempt in the facility by being proactive and prepared. In memory and recognition of late Chesapeake Police Officer William “Whiz” Whisenant, the class completed the “Whiz WOD” (workout of the day). Officer Whisenant tragically took his own life last year. Assistant Academy Director Sgt. Nikki Pascal spoke about Officer Whisenant (whom she attended the police academy with), his giving and warm personality, and the legacy he left behind.
“I hope today that you learned that you should always make sure each other are okay. Check on each other. Because sometimes the strongest person you know who looks like they are okay, might not be okay,” said Sgt. Pascal.
“He meant a lot to a lot of people. So today, when we do this workout, I need you to give 100% and put everything you have into it.”
“Yes, ma’am. 110%,” several trainees responded.
And they gave it their all.
Next week the trainees will learn the process of classifying new inmates and special population housing. They will also get an inside look at some of our administrative sections including Human Resources, Internal Affairs, and the Public Information Office.
Only 12 weeks to go, 21st Session!
