Week 9 of the 21st Session Academy is complete, which means the trainees are officially halfway to graduation!
“The time has flown,” said one trainee. “We know this is an experience we’ll never forget.”
However, one trainee’s time in the academy came to a premature end this week after the candidate called it quits. The remaining 11 trainees spent the week with our agency’s sharpest shooters (our Virginia DCJS-certified firearms instructors) as they began extensive firearms training.
Last week focused on firearm fundamentals and safety. This week after learning how to safely assemble, disassemble, and clean their soon-to-be service weapons, they were allowed to step foot on the range and put those lessons into practice.
“I have been looking forward to this week since the first day of the academy,” one trainee said, “I think we all have!”
The trainees were taught various shooting techniques and participated in scenario-based shooting drills.
Next, the trainees will get their chance behind the wheel. The Emergency Vehicle Operating Course (commonly called EVOC) begins next week. The trainees will learn defensive driving, emergency light operation, road safety, and pursuit procedures.
Only nine weeks to go, 21st Session!
