Week 14 of the 21st Session Training Academy is a wrap. As the academy begins winding down, the lessons this week were designed to make the trainees use the skills they learned earlier in the academy to new and challenging situations.
At the beginning of the academy the trainees are taught basic deputy skills. Each week since then, those skills were built upon and refined. For example, in week five, the trainees were taught the proper way to search and detain an individual. Those skills were the backbone of this week’s use of force and high-profile practicals.
The trainees completed various scenarios in which they had to safely and securely search, detain, and transport an academy instructor acting as an inmate. The instructors did not make it easy, they used every trick in the book to distract the trainees from completing their mission.
Thursday evening, the trainees returned to the Chesapeake Correctional Center to participate in actual cell searches. The purpose of these randomized searches is to locate contraband that can jeopardize the safety and security of the jail, the inmates, and the deputies.
Next week, the trainees will continue to build on their skills while learning rapid responses and building clearing.
Only three weeks to go, 21st session.
