Congratulations to Lt. J. Harrell and Deputy K. Pascarella on earning their new certifications from the American Jail Association! Lt. Harrell joined the ranks of Sheriff Jim O’Sullivan and seven other members of the Chesapeake Sheriff’s Office as recipients of the prestigious CJM certification. According to the AJA, there are now 11 certified jail managers in Hampton Roads; eight of them work for the Chesapeake Sheriff’s Office.

Deputy Pascarella became one of two CJO-certified deputies at the CSO and seven in Hampton Roads.

The recipients completed a thorough background investigation and an intensive four-hour exam prepared by the AJA and the Jail Manager Certification Commission. The exam was based purely on knowledge and experience; there was no study material. To earn the certification, applicants had to demonstrate competency, professionalism in the field, and strong specialty knowledge. The awards recognize continuing education and growth in the field of corrections management.

The AJA is a national, nonprofit organization that supports the professionals who operate our nation’s jails. It is the only national association focusing exclusively on issues specific to the operations of local correctional facilities.
